Winter 2011
Exciting things are happening at Roosevelt!
Starting this semester we have become a smaller learning community school. Students have been given the opportunity to choose between one of seven programs where they will stay with the same classmates and teachers for 4 years.

ALUMNI EVENTS
The play this year was Once on this Island directed by Ms. Cynthia Dowling, Ms. Jan Cameron and assisted by Mr. Randy Huebner. Although it was not a major Broadway production the RHS cast did an excellent job in performing it.  Next year’s show will be Guys and Dolls. Alumni night will be Friday, March 16, 2012 starting with a reception in room 117 at 5pm with the play going on at 7pm. As usual there will be a special Alumni seating at the show. The cost is $20.00 per person. Make your reservations by filling out the form on the last page!

Our 4th annual RHS Sports Hall of Fame Dinner was quite successful as we inducted 10 former RHS athletes and one player coach. We will take a break next year and resume our Hall of Fame event in 2013. Our plans to hold another Las Vegas reunion have been cancelled. We were not able to get the dates we wanted and the costs (airlines, hotel, food) were too high. Maybe in 2013 or 2014 we will do an event at a local casino.

ALL-YEARS REUNION AT RHS
Last year’s All-Years Reunion at RHS was so successful we have decided to do another one on Friday May 4, 2012. We expect a large turnout as we will advertise extensively. We will have an excellent buffet dinner and musical entertainment as well. The reunion will be held in the cafeteria at school but we will first have people meet by 4-5 year groups in classrooms so that you can find your friends easier. The cost will be $60.00 per person. Make your reservations by filling out the form on the last page!

LIBRARY NEWS
There has been some talk about naming the RHS library after two famous Roosevelt authors: Nelson Algren and Shel Silverstein. Please send us your thoughts about what kind of event we should have to celebrate these alumni.

AT THE SCHOOL
Our new principal Ricardo Trujillo has already made a mark at RHS. His energy level is non-ending and he has implemented several new programs. The main thrust at this time is the new small learning communities program. Read more about it in the enclosed flyer. His new leadership group of teachers already is functioning well. Cliff Gabor, our outstanding musical theatre director, has left to become principal of an elementary school in Chicago. We will miss him but wish the very best to him in his new position. Hopefully we can still call on him for help in our future productions!

SPORTS
Roosevelt’s Track team continued to improve this year, sending 4 athletes to the state finals! We competed in the 3000 meter race, the 4 x 4 relay, the 300 hurdles and the discus throw. The girls Softball team won their section championship! Good news for Roosevelt’s varsity Basketball team as Coach Manny Weincord has come out of retirement to assist Head Coach Jerry Taylor. Manny coached basketball at RHS for over 30 years and is a member of the state and city basketball hall of fames!

Jeanne Goodman, our celebrated RHS alumnus and die hard Cubs fan, celebrated her 98th birthday this summer at Wrigley Field with her grandsons. They arranged to have her name on the scoreboard and the entire crowd applauded at that moment. Quite a story!  Dr. Irwin Williger, RHS Class of 1931, will be turning 99 this year. He is pictured above throwing out the first pitch at the SF Giant spring training game in March, 2010. Our congratulations to both of these vivacious seniors. We look forward to seeing them, and all of you at our All-Years Reunion at RHS on May 4, 2012.

Despite the not so good economy, Roosevelt alumni continue to help our school. Please fill out the enclosed donation form as generously as you can, and come and visit our school. You will always be “RoughRiders” and are more than welcome at the school, especially at one of our upcoming events.

Sincerely,
Arnie Kamen (June 1950)
